Posted on Nov 27th, 2009
Keep morale up is a challenge for in all types of economies, but more so when the downturn is ongoing. Workforce.com and eHow.com offers these tips for employee morale now, and going forward.
Challenges
In tougher economic times, nervous workers will have their pandering radar way up. It is better to create an overall high morale environment then try to change everything all at once. It can be done in gradual steps, but first proper planning must be the key.
Implement the following tips are part of the overall plan.
Morale Boosters
- Make people feel as if they are a part of the business. That involves good communication on how everything is going and asking for feedback regarding that communication. Everyone, from associates to the CEO, needs communication and the chance to express their opinion/ideas regarding that communication.
- Reward, Reward, Reward should be the mantra for excellent work. Reward simply doesn’t have to be money, although that always seems to work. Reward can be perks like extra vacations days, gift certificates and surprises like lunches or parties. Also, remember the most humble high performer, it’s not just executives that need to feel rewarded.
- Loyalty to everyone that is pitching in. Showing your loyalty to workers is an easy way to caring and creating an atmosphere of trust. And it has to be honest loyalty, even in times where difficult decisions have to be made. People appreciate that.
- Treating employees like adults. Not everyone understands the ways and means of commerce, but they do understand respect. Getting respect means giving respect and the easiest way to that is the treatment of adults like adults. Knowing a little bit about an employee, for example, goes a long way in connection, and that connection is part of adult colleague relationships.
- Flexibility in the workplace is always appreciated. Even though with some businesses it is impossible, if you have a business that can allow flexible hours, you can get loyal employees who need that flexibility. Thinking outside normal structure is a great morale booster.
- Alternatives. If the economy has reduced the bottom line, effecting monetary rewards or holiday parties, be sure to provide some alternatives. Even the smallest gesture can connect workers with management and potluck socials instead of elaborate parties go a long way for everyone in contributing to morale. Do something.
